Yesterday, OpenAI disclosed an incident involving its analytics vendor, Mixpanel. The attacker did not breach OpenAI’s infrastructure. They didn’t access chat data, API keys, model information, or anything we typically think of as “high sensitivity.” Instead, they accessed Mixpanel and exported a dataset containing names, emails, approximate locations, organization identifiers, and browser metadata tied to some OpenAI API accounts.

In other words:
Cyber was the entry point, but privacy was the exposure.

That distinction matters. While the media framed this as a cybersecurity story, what was exposed was personal data,the kind protected under GDPR, CCPA, CPRA, LGPD, and every modern privacy law. And because the data belonged to OpenAI’s users, OpenAI still had to manage the fallout, even though the compromise didn’t occur on their servers.

That’s the part privacy teams immediately recognize. This wasn’t “OpenAI got hacked.” It was the far more common and far more frustrating reality of digital business: a vendor had access to personal data, and that vendor became the vulnerability.

This is why the conversation is shifting toward approaches that are autonomous, continuous, and intelligence-driven, because anything less leaves too many blind spots.
